More boots, more walkin
We have another walker.
Anna decided that she had had enough of this crawling / bear crawling and after 16 months, her mom and dad had had enough as well. We learned that trying to rush things just doesn't work, but our expectations were set with Jack walking at 12 months and Ben at 14. Surely Anna would come in there somewhere.
Well, she finally got ready and we got the camera out. She's pretty much a full walker now - slow, not very steady, but getter better every day.

Beauty Salon
Back in March, Anna had her first haircut.

Her hair was getting a little scraggly so we needed to do something about it. We took her to where we usually get the boys' cuts, Cool Cuts 4 Kids. One conveniently exists in the local Toys R Us near the homestead. Personally, I'd like to see the kids get cuts at Bird's Barbershop, a funky little place that has a pretty cool music-theme to it (Walk in, Rock out). But the kids like Cool Cuts.
Anna started off pretty good...
but then quickly decided that she didn't like what was going on.
Once we got back home, she had calmed down and decided that she really likes her new 'do.

Anna Turns One

| Anna B Day |
Way back in January, almost two months ago, Anna turned one. It was a pretty fun time - we had her Godparents (and family) over, Calvin, Laura and the girls and Ben's best buddy Jonas. Click on the image to get to the photos.

Anika, yet again
Here is the Schneeman clan at home pretty soon after Anika and Kathleen came back. That's Jack, Ben, and Kathleen, with Anika reclining on her big brothers' laps.
Now, Anika is getting some quality time with Jack. Jack has been very sweet and helpful with his little sis, but he's starting to fray a bit (not going to bed w/out snuggling with someone, that sort of thing)
Here's the little girl getting a little shut-eye.
Anika and the first bath. Through clever use of reflection and composition, I managed to get everyone. I'm such an awesome photographer. (Don't forget, this blog is about me)
Here's some detail of the pretty little girl. I tried to get a bit artistic here. It is hard to do since she is two weeks and just doesn't take direction very well...
But if you set her up and use her as a prop, she does quite well.

A couple of more photos of 'Nika
About these images. They were shot with the film camera, loaded with 800 speed Kodak Porta (rated at 640). The scanjob is a poor one and the relatively fast film makes for a lot more grain than I'm used to. Sorry about that. As usual, click to get bigger images.
On Tuesday after 'Nika was born, I brought Jack and Ben to see their baby sister and mommy at the hospital. It turns out that hospital beds are way more interesting to two-year-olds than baby sisters are. Who knew? Still, in the chaos, we managed to herd everyone together to get a family photo (minus me).

Jack has been doing great with his baby sister and the new world order. He is very mature and sweet, but I think tonight he hit his limit. I spent most of the afternoon playing with him and when it was time for me to spend time with Ben and 'Nika, he did not take it too well. He eventually calmed down but when I suggested that she and I read to him for bedtime, he did not want anything to do with her. Going to have to watch that.
Ben, however, is not doing too well at all. He's pleasant enough towards 'Nika (not that we'd consider leaving him in the room alone with her - that's generally just not safe), but towards Kathleen, Ben had been pretty cold. She can't pick him up and when he sees her carrying Anika, he's understandably hurt. There was one day when he wouldn't look at Kathleen at all, even when she was sitting on the floor two feet from him. That was hard on Kathleen. I think he's warming back up to Kathleen, which in nice.
Finally, I'm doing well. Three boys would have been pretty neat, but having a daughter is very special. I'm happy.

We're All Home Now
The girls (Kathleen and Anika) came home today. It's nice to have the family all under one roof. Let the chaos commence. Jack is being extremely sweet to his baby sister, helping out, giving her gentle hugs, that sort of thing. Ben doesn't quite know what is going on, but he is interested in the "bee-bee". He even said "night-night Anika" (but you have to listen between the syllables to catch it).

More here
Whence "Anika"? Well, there are two lines of genesis, apparently. One is Hausa (African), and the other is Hebrew, as a variant of Ann, which feeds into this Scandanavian lineage as well. It is sort of explained here. Who knew? We pronounce it "uh-knee-ka" (or something like that).

(I also learned that "whence" is the antonym for "whither" - I never bothered to figure that out before)
