Farmer's Market Fajitas

A long time ago, I read a book that caused me to start thinking about from where my family's food comes. Kathleen is attending a class that recently explored the same topic, but from a slightly different point-of-view. We decided to try to get more of our food locally and this past Saturday, I took the boys to a local Farmer's Market to see what we could see.

We were scheduled to have some folks over for fajitas that weekend so I went to the Market in search of fajita fixins. I did not find any chicken, but I found some grass-fed beef, reasonably local and some very local onions. Bell peppers are out of season - I got those at a "healthy" grocery store instead. Eating locally will prove to be a bit of a challenge as our eating habits will have to change with the seasons, but that's sort of the point.

The dinner plans fell through (we went out instead) and I made the fajitas the next night. I bought a "tough" cut of meat and did not marinate it at all. Consequentially, it was full of connective tissue and very difficult to bite through. That was too bad, but I don't think it turned us off from local foods. Next time, I'll make sure to either buy a better cut or marinate (or both - a tequila, jalapeƱo and lime marinade makes for tasty fajitas).
